The Writer's Journey Summer Garden Party

More than 60 writers gathered in Laura's backyard on July 31st for the 2nd annual Writer's Journey Reunion and Summer Garden party. Old friends from past writing groups past had heartfelt reunions. Aspiring writers met experienced ones. We schmoozed for a while and then sat outside in almond colored chairs and wrote to a variety of prompts I provided: some funny, some serious, some poetic, both contemporary or evocative of childhood memories.

Those who wanted to read their writing to a fellow writer and had the benefit of being heard by a respectful, receptive listener. Some people experienced writing practice for the first time. For others, it was like being putting back on a comfortable, familiar shoe. In the course of the writing, many were surprised at the material that emerged on the page. As it should be. Writing should always be a discovery.

After our writing session (during which I ran around with a cordless mic like Oprah so volunteers could read their stories to the larger group) and a drawing for two free writing classes, we had what one participant described as, "the best potluck I've ever been to." Plus a huge chocolate strawberry shortcake from the Buttery that said on top, "Keep your hand moving." In other words, "Keep writing!"

Because my partner Karyn is a marvelous gardener, the garden was full of huge, amazing dahlias, towering sunflowers and vibrant zinnias.

What a great way to spend a Santa Cruz summer day. It's always wonderful for word people to get together and share words.

And you know what I realized today? That I don't just teach writing; in fact, it's not even the main thing I do. What I really do is build community.

Thanks to all my generous, talented writing students who staffed this event, set up and cleaned up. You made it easy for me say, "Sure, we'll do this again!"
